Talismans related to pregnancy. Part1

One of the legends of the Ancient Rome claims that Juno, the goddess of birth or midwifery and wife of the all-mighty Jupiter, once seeded the Earth with a multitude of gems, small and large. Those gems were destined by Juno to assist women in childbearing and to serve as their guardians through pregnancy, labor and lactation.

In some regions of Asia, ancient tradition recommends presenting both the expecting mother, and later her baby, with gemstones of different varieties.
In many cultures and countries of old, people attempted to influence the mysterious, hidden and apparently magic ways of childbearing with a similarly magic properties of gems and natural minerals.

One of the beliefs emphasizes magic properties of the Ruby. A ring with Ruby worn on a little finger was believed to help women to conceive, whereas earrings or a pendant with Ruby were thought to be beneficial during pregnancy. However, Ruby should be removed during the labor itself, as it is believed to induce hemorrhaging.

Amethyst was also considered helpful for conceiving. An old book of healing so describes Amethyst: " ... it chases away bad thoughts, brings kindness to the spirit and helps in all endeavours. It turns the barren into fertile". It was also believed that a couple with infertility issues should drink from the same cup, made of Amethyst. Amethyst should be set in a silver frame and woman are recommended to wear it on the ring finger of the left hand.

The Jasper, in particular its green variety, helps in labor. Woman in labor is recommended to wear this gem on her hand or attached to her hip.

Emerald is considered a talisman for mothers. It adds strength during labor and alleviates the pain, as well as stops inflammation in the after-labor period. Emerald is at its best when set in a silver frame, and on the little finger.

The Amber bits with a milky hue promote successful pregnancy. In some families the nurse was given an Amber necklace to wear, as a means to protect the baby from any negative influence.

Gagate is also mentioned in the old scriptures: to stimulate labor, the woman should drink three days water from a bowl where gagatt was placed.

In Czech villages, woman were wearing a necklace of Carnelian, to protect themselves against miscarriage.

It is also believed that Coral may grant many children and wealth to a family.

Small bits of Coral branches, resembling small human figures (babies) in appearance, or those from malachite were often hidden in the cradle sheets, in order to protect against evil eye.

All the above relates to the natural stones, as artificial stones do not possess any of the above mentioned qualities.

It is indisputable that during all the stages of childbearing women should employ every measure to protect her well-being and maintain healthy energy state. It is therefore recommended to wear an appropriate gemstone for each month. Those stones will strengthen a positive energy state and promote a successful labor.
